Women Organization for Rural Development (WORD) is a pioneering organization committed to empowering disadvantaged communities, particularly women, in the Keonjhar, Deogarh and Dhenkanal districts of Odisha. Since 1992, WORD has played a facilitating and supportive role in fostering socio-economic development, ensuring equal opportunities for marginalized sections of society, and advocating for civil rights regardless of sex, caste, or creed. The organization focuses on women’s empowerment and socio-economic advancement, striving to strengthen self-governance systems, improve Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH), and enhance primary education at the grassroots level. Additionally, WORD actively works on forest and environmental protection, the promotion of organic farming, and sustainable livelihood programs through Natural Resource Management (NRM). Over the years, WORD has taken on diverse roles, adapting its strategies based on community needs. It has successfully implemented several key initiatives, including the promotion of Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to foster financial independence, healthcare programs focused on maternal and child well-being, and environmental conservation efforts aimed at preserving natural resources and climate justice action. Additionally, the organization has been instrumental in promoting organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring long-term economic stability for rural/tribal communities. With a strong commitment to social transformation, WORD continues to drive positive change in under developed areas of Odisha, creating a future where women and marginalized communities can thrive with dignity and self-reliance.
